As of January 28, 2008, the ISOC Philadelphia Area Chapter was officially recognized as a new chapter by ISOC. ISOC Philadelphia Area Chapter has been created to serve persons who live or work in Philadelphia, southeastern Pennsylvania, parts of New Jersey, and Delaware.
Sponsoring the formation of ISOC Philadelphia Area Chapter is Internet pioneer, Afilias Global Registry services and Philadelphia-area community leader, Metropolitan Career Center. These two organizations lend leadership and resources that combine a focus on the technical operation of the Internet and the needs of the Philadelphia-area community.

"The ISOC Philadelphia Area Chapter will serve the interests of our community by providing a means of forwarding the goals of the Internet Society in our region, especially in the areas of education and training, standards and protocols and public policy.
While there are many "tech groups" in our community of interest, no existing group enables individuals and organizations to address these issues in the same manner as an ISOC Chapter.
The purpose of the chapter will be to focus on education, communication and community service, with emphasis on local implications."
The Internet Society (ISOC) is a professional membership society with more than 150 organisations and over 20,000 individual members in more than 180 countries. It provides leadership in addressing issues that confront the future of the Internet, and is the organisational home for the groups responsible for Internet infrastructure standards, including the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) and the Internet Architecture Board (IAB).
